Getting a Serbian Driver's License

A comprehensive guide to obtaining a Serbian driver's license — from using a foreign license to taking the driving test, completing the medical exam, and gathering required documents.

The information in this guide may be incomplete or outdated. Laws and regulations in Serbia may change. Before making important decisions, be sure to consult official sources or professionals.

Using a Foreign Driver's License

If you have moved to Serbia, your foreign driver's license is valid for 6 months from the date you obtain your residence permit. During this period, you may freely drive while carrying the original license along with a certified translation into Serbian. After the six-month period expires, you must obtain a Serbian driver's license.

If you hold an International Driving Permit (IDP), it is also accepted during the same timeframe. Note that an IDP is used in addition to your national license, not as a replacement for it.

Converting a Foreign License to Serbian

Serbia has mutual recognition agreements with a number of countries. If your country is on the approved list, you can convert your license without taking any exams. For citizens of countries without such an agreement, both theoretical and practical driving tests are required.

To convert your license, visit a Ministry of Interior (MUP) office. Required documents include:

  • Valid foreign driver's license (original)
  • Certified translation of your license into Serbian (by a court-certified translator)
  • Passport (original and copy)
  • Residence permit (boravišna dozvola) or white card
  • Medical certificate (lekarsko uverenje) — issued within the last 6 months
  • Two photographs sized 3.5 x 4.5 cm
  • Proof of fee payment

Medical Examination

To obtain or convert a driver's license, you must undergo a medical examination at an authorized healthcare facility (Dom zdravlja or a licensed private clinic). The examination includes:

  • Vision test
  • Hearing test
  • Blood pressure measurement
  • General check-up by a physician
  • Psychological evaluation (for certain license categories)

The cost of the medical exam ranges from 4,000 to 7,000 dinars depending on the facility. The certificate is valid for 6 months.

Taking the Serbian Driving Test

If a no-exam conversion is not available for your country, you will need to enroll in a driving school and pass the required tests. The process involves:

Theory Test

  1. Enroll in a driving school (auto škola)
  2. Complete the theoretical course on Serbian traffic regulations
  3. Pass the theory exam electronically — the test is administered in Serbian

The cost of theoretical training is approximately 10,000 to 15,000 dinars.

Practical Test

  1. Complete a minimum of 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an instructor
  2. Pass the practical driving exam — driving through the city with an examiner

The cost of practical lessons ranges from 40,000 to 70,000 dinars depending on the driving school and city.

Costs

Overall expenses for obtaining a Serbian driver's license:

  • Medical certificate: 4,000 — 7,000 RSD
  • Theory course and exam: 10,000 — 15,000 RSD
  • Practical lessons (40 hours): 40,000 — 70,000 RSD
  • Government fee for license issuance: 3,500 — 5,000 RSD
  • Translation of foreign license: 2,000 — 4,000 RSD

If you qualify for a no-exam conversion, the total cost is significantly lower — approximately 10,000 to 15,000 RSD (translation, medical certificate, and government fee).
